⏵ character information
name: Joshua "Jay" Guthrie
canon: Marvel Comics (616)
age: Late teens, maybe 18 or 19.
canon point: X-Factor 2020, #6
history: https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Joshua_Guthrie_(Earth-616)
abilities: Jay has a Marvel-style healing factor, one that's capable of bringing him back from injuries that should cause death or even briefly do (being drowned at the bottom of a lake, stabbed in the heart, etc.)

Apparently, the source of this ability is his wings, which doesn't make sense as wings don't have a lot of actual tissue (mostly hollow bone and feathers) so there's not really any place for extra organs or mechanisms to create the healing factor, but I digress.

personality:

Jay's a sweetheart. He's got a real sense of family, in an old-school Southern way where you do what you're 'sposed to and mind Ma's rules. He was raised somewhat religious and unfortunately has internalized some of the worse concepts about sin, humans being made in the image of God, etc. In his words and actions, Jay doesn't seem to have any evangelical Christian assholery - the bad stuff seems to be directed at himself.

He has the teeniest bit of trouble with listening to his older siblings, mainly because Sam and Paige have it easier, being able to hide what they are and having more "useful" mutations than just flight and sound mimicry. There's some jealousy there. While a lot of the other young mutants relish their powers, Jay is closer in mindset to those who would consider giving it up if he could.

He's kind, with a pretty high EQ for a teenager. Jay's thoughtful with others' emotions and needs. He's a dumpster fire with his own and judges himself far too harshly, but is the sort of friend who will anticipate a friend's needs and go out of his way to meet them. He tries to be the voice of reason when they're being dumb, too, but it usually doesn't work. Jay's nice, and people like him, but he's also too in his own head sometimes and doesn't like to force people to do what they don't want to do.

He's a real stickler for that. Jay's had people try to boss him around - tell him who he can't date, send him to Xavier's like he's going to be an X-Man when really it's only to get him out of Kentucky cause they don't want to deal with him. Maybe he can't put his foot down and avoid being shipped off to New York, but he can and will stand up for himself and others. Not a lot of shouting, just quiet, polite but firm refusals that are usually punctuated by him walking away. He doesn't like being used as a prop or chess piece - Jay's independent, and a bit of a loner, which is the heart-breaking part of his murder, as he was used by a master manipulator who took advantage of the very best intentions of a slightly unstable young man who doesn't know how to manage grief well at all.

Jay has a history of depression and suicidal tendencies. Given his actions with letting Stryker manipulate him and allowing his wings to be amputated on a pipe dream of an old-Testament style sacrifice to God to protect his loved ones, he's not entirely past it. That's still self-destructive behavior even if Jay wasn't the one wielding the knife.

Finally, Jay's musically inclined and has a bit of an artist's spirit. He has a very good voice and knows how to play guitar. If left to his own devices, it will be music and moping from here on out.
